Bored of Being Boring

Can we just take a moment to appreciate/ critique just how crazy this whole YEAR has been in our little fashion world? And by that, I seriously mean appreciate AND critique…

With Fashion Month almost over (cue violin), I think we can take an early look back on some highlights.

Firstly, just in the spirit of getting this bit out of the way, I think it’s safe to say that Jeremy Scott has succeeded in searing Moschino into everyone’s heads with his first ever collection for the house. And I don’t mean that in the good sense.

Seriously, WHAT. THE. HELL. I can’t decide what’s more shocking: the fact that FW 14-15 at Moschino consists of Moschino-Donalds and Spongebob-inspired crap (yes, I went there), or that there’s remarkably few complaints about it?! I can only imagine everyone in agreement with me has been driven to gouge their eyes out watching this and can no longer express their views online, because frankly, it’s awful. Tacky, ugly… I’m thinking H&M early days… and that cow-themed number was paired with a totally Chanel-inspired plastic jacket.

Which brings me to disappointment number 2 (bear with me, these is hope)…

Chanel. It hurts me to say it, seeing as Chanel is theoretically my one-and-only (only without Galliano at Dior, though), but SS14 was tragic. I tried - really hard- to like Ready-To-Wear, but there’s a very definite point at which a collection stops being “fun” and starts being mad, and Karl crossed it looong ago.

I breathed a sigh of relief to see that the paint-panel design was completely absent from the Haute Couture show. But even then, honestly, I expected more. Personally, I can see the “chic sneakers” trend getting completely absued and overworn this season, although kudos to Karl for kick-starting it. The wedding-theme was lovely too (have you seen how cute little Hudson Kroening is in Cara Delevingne’s instgram?!), but the whole collection was a tiny bit too much like a lesser version of SS13, no? Plus, that hair…

But because Chanel has a special place in my heart, I did find something I truly love: the cuff earrings sported by Cara that’s started another fad. Edie Campbell’s also got some pretty sweet ones. I love them so much I bought my own and I don’t even have piercings. They’re comin’ though, just for the cuff earrings.

Other disappointments included Miu Miu, Roberto Cavalli, Dior and Fendi (only so-so), but that would be too much ranting for one post. I did promise optimism.

So. CURRENT FAVOURITES: Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino, Burberry Prorsum, Louis Vuitton (for SS14), Zac Posen and Michael Kors.

I can’t get over D&C. I thought SS14 was beautiful, but the fact that they’ve topped that in FW14 is a true feat. I absolutely love how the house has built on the image of Byzantine/Roman Catholic ecclesiastical icons and saints, especially considering its Italian roots.

ImageOpulence is BACK and I can’t say how happy that makes me. We’ve had a long, hard winter of minimalism and much as I love understated elegance, clean lines and heavy construction, I’m impatient for springtime flamboyance and bored of being boring.

Valentino, Burberry and Michael Kors all scored high on my list for being beautiful and totally wearable (if you strike oil), but I’m going to take a moment to look at Louis Vuitton’s SS14 collection.

As you might know, Marc Jacobs announced last October he was stepping down from Louis Vuitton after 16 years as its creative director, to focus on his own house. LVMH (who also own Marc Jacobs) support this. Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault of LVMH told Alexandra Shulman, “Marc has provided fashion with so much during his years at Vuitton. It’s important to know how to exit, as well as arrive, and it’s going to be exciting to see how this impacts on the creativity in his own line.”

And talking about an exciting exit… I think SS14 has been completely dominated by Marc’s final show for Louis Vuitton. The best way to understand how cool it was is just to watch it, so HERE:

Let’s just agree: wow. I don’t think I’ve seen a show like that since Galliano left Dior, but it was incredible, and I love how Marc presented a collection completely in black, just like his first ever collection for Louis Vuitton. How incredibly different to his own house as well, right?

I could spazz all day about every show out there, but the drunken shouting coming from outside has reminded me it’s past my bedtime. All I can say is, even though I’ve been massively disappointed by some choice favourites this year, both in SS and FW14, I’m really looking forward to finally dress over-the-top and extravagant!

Love,
Danai X
